About

Alberta's fire service leaders are navigating a rapidly evolving landscape—where innovative building designs, shifting urban densities, and performance-based code solutions are redefining how we protect our communities. In this keynote, we'll explore how fire services can play a pivotal role in shaping safe outcomes through meaningful consultation and collaboration.

The Alberta Fire Code, administered under the Safety Codes Act, works in tandem with the Alberta Building and trades discipline Codes to create a comprehensive safety framework. Understanding the interplay between these codes is essential for fire service professionals who are increasingly called upon to provide fire inspections, input on alternative solutions such as single-stair designs, and other innovative approaches to building construction that can impact firefighting operations.

While fire departments do not approve building designs, their input on operational impacts of building design are not just vital, they are required to be included in the code itself. This keynote will highlight how early engagement  can lead to better outcomes, stronger relationships, and more resilient communities.

We'll also spotlight the role of the Safety Codes Council in supporting this collaboration—through accreditation, education, and shared governance. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how Alberta's fire services will be an active partner in Safety Codes Administration, and the future of building safety.

Together, we can build a future where innovation and safety are not at odds—but aligned in service of every Albertan.
