About

The greatest variable in a fire is not the system; it's unpredictable human behaviour. Derek has witnessed people panic, freeze, and even reach around an active fire to retrieve items. The common "Safety Third" compliance mindset fails to account for this reality, creating fatal gaps in a building's emergency response. We need to fight against complacency. Authority: Derek Engh, a retired Firefighter, volunteer Fire Captain and accredited Safety Codes Officer (B2 Fire), draws on decades of emergency response and complex systems design (including facilities like apartment buildings, airport hangars, and the Kennedy Space Center). He argues that systems must be designed (with all other fire protection) for maximum panic and minimal reaction time (fighting complacency). This session moves beyond basic code to address the core challenges of multi-story, mixed-use, and medical office buildings, focusing on Proficiency through Practice and clarity. Key topics include: The critical design and communication of the Safe Refuge Area (SRA), ensuring it is 300 feet away, clear of smoke/fire, and out of the way of responding firefighters. Derek will contrast the passive evacuation signs with the active systems  not just having systems, but having them in working order. Ensure every person knows how to get out of the building and how to use all of the safety equipment, reducing the high cost of confusion, Goal: Elevate safety to the front of people's minds.
